Panthers advance to Group I quarterfinals

Glen Rock advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA Group I Girls' Volleyball Tournament on Friday when the sixth-seeded Panthers blanked No. 22 Jonathon Dayton Regional of Springfield by a score of 3-0. The Panthers won by scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-13 as they upped their overall record to a sparkling 25-4 in only their third varsity season.
Glen Rock played No. 3 Lacordaire of Upper Montclair on Tuesday with winner moving into the semifinals on Thursday. The Group I championship game will be played on the campus of William Paterson University in Wayne on Saturday starting at 4:00 PM.
Marina Hansen continued her string of outstanding performances as she delivered eight service aces, slammed 10 kills and picked up a dozen digs. Elise Welton dished off 11 assists and scooped up three digs while Jessica Just passed off seven assists and tapped five digs. Carolyn Paul spiked four kills and picked up six digs while Emily Brett Rubin was credited with four digs. Sarah Sexton blasted three kills, Danielle Blakely had two while Linda Casey and Alyson Mazzarella were credited with one kill apiece.
Head coach Bonnie Zimmerman's squad closed out its B-PSL season with a 3-0 triumph over Passaic Tech on Thursday. The Panthers won by scores of 25-10, 26-24, 25-13 to finish with a 21-3 mark in the league, finishing second behind Hawthorne. Paul served four aces and scooped up nine digs while Welton was credited with four service aces, blasted five kills, distributed nine assists and recorded a dig.
Just excelled at her setter post, passing off 16 assists and picked up five digs while Hansen spiked 17 kills and picked up 10 digs. Sexton had three kills with Blakely, Mazzarella, Rubin and Liz Straus contributing digs.
The day before, Glen Rock defeated Manchester Regional 3-0 as the Panthers won by scores of 25-19, 25-14, and 25-14. Strauss delivered five service aces while Hansen and Allison Reiter were credited with 4 apiece while the setters, Just and Welton dished off 12 assists each.
Glen Rock's varsity roster includes eight seniors and four juniors who have developed with the program. The Panthers went 2-24 their inaugural season and posted a 12-14 record in 2002. Linda Casey and Just are the senior co-captains. The other members of the Class of 2004 are Blakely, Reiter, Rubin, Sexton, Strauss and Marie Uchiyama.
Four outstanding juniors will return as the nucleus of next year's squad, looking to carry on the winning tradition established this year. The juniors are Marina Hansen, Alyson Mazzarella, Carolyn Paul and Elise Welton who will be supplemented by the junior varsity players who are directed by assistant coach Chris Baron.
